#Black History Month: Alive and Kicking, A Poem

Ladies and gentlemen,

Racism is alive and kicking!

It has the power to gun you down

Disarmed you, gunned down

Your hopes and dreams, gunned down

Your life, gunned down.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Racism is alive and kicking!

It takes multiple forms,

From the I’m not racist, but

To the smile of a police officer whose failed to do his job by using too much force.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Police brutality is alive and kicking.

Plenty of names to be added to the list of people killed by the arm of the state.

Shouldn’t the police protect us? Shouldn’t they help us in our time of need?

Then why do they kill us, why can’t they see beyond their own prejudices?

Aren’t well all human beings?

Ladies and gentlemen,

Police brutality is alive and kicking!

You thought that the cases seen in the 60s were now over?

Think again!

When a police officer holds you in a chokehold, when a police officer guns you down, when a police officer stops you and arrest you because they believe that you are soliciting based on a biological factor that is just having more melanin in your skin….

You know that the state has fucked up.

I wrote this poem when I finally became ‘woke’. I had lived in a world of fantasy and naiveté before then and I just needed an outlet for my shock.
